¿Cuándo produjiste el álbum y donde?
El álbum fue producido en 1995 cuando aún vivía en casa de mis padres, en mi propia habitación habilitada como estudio. Era una habitación pequeña pero llena de discos, con equipo para hacer música, un lavabo y una cama. El año pasado decidí darle a ese mismo álbum un toque adicional en el que es ahora mi estudio actual, un espacio que no tiene nada que ver con el de 1995. Un estudio con vistas al mar, cuenta con luz del día, y por supuesto cuenta con más equipación técnica que el de hace 17 años.

¿Por qué decidiste sacar el álbum justo ahora?
Como ya te he comentado el álbum apareció en 1995 pero de alguna manera sobrevivió a la prueba del tiempo. Muchos amigos, artistas y seguidores me preguntaban constantemente si iba a reeditarlo porque muchos de esos tracks suenan aún frescos. Además pensé que sería una buena oportunidad para que lo escuche la gente que nunca oyó hablar de él. Está dirigido a las nuevas generaciones, para que conozcan algo de mi antiguo trabajo.

¿El álbum cuenta con algún concepto detrás?
Cuando lo produje originalmente no pensé en ninguna idea concreta, excepto que tenía que sonar a Detroit o al Detroit a la manera Steve Rachmad.

¿Quién crees que te ha influenciado más a la hora de producir este álbum?
El álbum entero está influenciado de arriba abajo por el sonido Detroit. Me influenció mucha gente de ese sonido. Para ese álbum en concreto debería citar a Derrick May, Kenny Larkin, Kraftwerk and Basic Channel. ¿Basic Channel? Te preguntarás. Pues si, en aquellos años los pressings de Basic Channel venían de Detroit y sonaban a Detroit. Para mí Basic Channel era Detroit, aunque después me di cuenta de que realmente era un proyecto de Berlín.

¿Cuáles son tus planes para el futuro?
Tengo preparado otro doble doce pulgadas en Music Man con el proyecto Parallel 9. La referencia se titula Magnetic Reversal y ha despertado bastante interés, así que estoy pensando en publicar más tracks con ese seudónimo. Puede que incluso firme un álbum como Parallel 9. A inicios de julio llegará una nueva referencia titulada Bling it up! que publicará el sello de Joris Voorn y Edwin Oosterwal, Rejected. También he finalizado recientemente unos remixes para el álbum de Nina Kraviz en Rekids que saldrán en breve. Tengo también bastantes bolos como Dj para promocionar el álbum Secret Life of Machines. Va a ser difícil meterse en el estudio con toda esta vorágine pero ahora mismo me siento inspirado y quiero hacer muchas cosas. Así que estad atentos. Mi agenda está a tope y me siento preparado para iniciar el verano. La primera parada será en Sónar, el 13 de junio, en el que actuaré en la fiesta Saved & Rejected organizada por mi plataforma Studio 80. Estaré haciendo un mano a mano con Karotte al que seguirá otro entre Joris Voorn y Nic Fanciulli. Al final de este mes iré al Fusion festival en Alemania donde estaré tocando y disfrutando de la experiencia de estar en el campo a lo largo del festival. ¿Where was the album produced (studio, tools, etc) and when was the album produced (same location or diferent locations, any collaborators)?
Steve Rachmad: The album was produced in 1995, when I lived at my parents' house in my bedroom/studio: In a small room full of records, equipment, a closet and a bed. In 2011 I have given the album an extra touch out of my current studio, a room which now looks very much different then back in 1995. It's now a studio which has a view on the water, a lot of daylight, and even more equipment than back in 1995.

¿Why did you decide to publish the album now?
Steve Rachmad: It already came out in 1995 but somehow survived the test of time. A lot of friends, artists and fans kept asking about re-releasing it because most of the tracks sounded still quite fresh nowadays. And next to that a lot of people never heard it or never heard about it. So it's also for the new generation to get to know some of my older stuff.

¿Any concrete concept behind the album?
When I made it there was not really a concept except that it had to feel "Detroit," or "Detroit" Steve Rachmad way.

¿Who do you think influenced you most when producing the album?
The whole album is for me a total Detroit influence. Of course people influenced me but not just one guy. On this album I would have say for sure Derrick May, Kenny Larkin, Kraftwerk and Basic Channel. Basic Channel?? Yes, back in the days all the Basic Channel pressings came from Detroit and they sounded like the music from Detroit. So for me Basic Channel came from Detroit but later to find out that it came from Berlin.

¿What are your plans for the future (in terms of producing / gigs)?
I have just had another double 12" out on Music Man under Parallel 9 name. The release is called Magnetic Reversal and has stirred up quite some attention already, so I am definitely planning to produce more tracks under this name again, maybe even an album. In the beginning of July comes my release Bling it up! on Joris Voorn's and Edwin Oosterwal's label Rejected. I recently also made some remixes for Nina Kraviz album on Rekids, this is about to come out soon as well. With a busy DJ schedule, touring to promote Secret Life of Machines, it's pretty hard to find time for the studio, but I feel inspired and I want to do a lot. So stay tuned. In terms of gigs, my schedule is full and I'm ready for the summer and all the festivals. The first stop is Sonar, on June 13, where I play at Saved & Rejected presented by Studio 80. I will be doing a b2b set with Karotte there, followed by a b2b set of Joris Voorn and Nic Fanciulli. End of this month I also go to Fusion festival in Germany, where I'll be playing but also enjoying the full experience in a camper for the whole duration of the festival.
